Herzig Eye Institute First in North America to Introduce LipiFlow®

Are you affected with dry eyes? Well, you're not alone! More than 100 million people worldwide are too and 65 per cent of them are suffering from Evaporative Dry Eye disease, which hinders daily activities such as reading, using the computer, wearing contact lenses and being outdoors on windy days.

Evaporative Dry Eye disease causes the eye to become dry, itchy and gritty, and often become red and swollen. The disease occurs when small glands in the eyelid margins produce oil which then creates a deficiency in the lipids in the tear film resulting in the water in the tears to faster. The small gland is called the meibomian. Herzig Eye Institute is the first centre in North
America to introduce LipiFlow®. It is a new advanced treatment system for patients suffer from Evaporative Dry Eye disease and the procedure has received a medical device license from Health Canada.

The non-invasive treatment only takes 12 minutes per eye and a cup-shaped device is placed over the eye and begins to warm the inner layer
of the lids at 42.5oC while keeping the eye cool. Then, the inflatable outer layer puts pressure on the outer lids.

Clinical studies have shown that most patients who have received a single LipiFlow® treatment, have felt at least some relief of their dry eye symptoms within the two weeks following the treatment. And, at four weeks after the LipiFlow® treatment, 79 per cent of patients reported
improvement in dry eye symptoms.
