Gallery in the Garden: In The City
City Life as seen by Adrian Greene, Ian Maynard and Neil Whitworth until September 8

Sherway Gardens’ (Hwy 427 & the QEW) current Gallery in the Garden exhibit entitled In The City features paintings and drawings of city life by Adrian Greene, Ian Maynard and Neil Whitworth.  The exhibit is on display until Saturday, September 8 in the corridor at door 3.

Adrian Greene is a British born artist living in Mississauga. He studied fine art in London, England, and attended the Heatherley School of Art, and the Royal College of Art. Adrian is a member of Neilson Park Creative Centre, the Etobicoke Art Group, Lakeshore Arts, and the Toronto Watercolour Society. He has exhibited his work in numerous juried and non-juried shows, winning several awards. Adrian’s paintings are in private collections in Canada, England, and Israel.

As far back as Public School and High School, Ian Maynard exhibited art in a variety of media at county fairs in Kent County. He graduated as an interior designer from OCA in 1965 and spent most of his career with the Ontario Government at Queen's Park in Toronto. It wasn't until retirement that Ian was able to find time to return to the art field and his former interests of watercolour and pen and ink drawing. About the same time as he discovered Neilson Park Creative Centre in 2007, Ian moved into wide format drawing, working in ink on 140lb rough watercolour paper with the occasional use of watercolour as an accent. Each drawing is exciting as hidden shapes appear on the page and are implemented into the final creation.

Etobicoke artist Neil Whitworth was born in Montreal and as soon as he was able to hold a pencil, he had an interest in art. He studied at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art and other private art schools in the Montreal area. Now, after 40 years in retail advertising for Eaton’s, Holt Renfrew, Simpsons and the Bay, he has time to paint his favorite subject, the varied Canadian landscape. Neil’s paintings are found in private collections in Canada, USA and Great Britain and in corporate collections including Honeywell and Inco. Neil is a member of The Etobicoke Art Group, Neilson Park Creative Centre and an elected member since 1998 of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour (CSPWC).

TD Toronto Jazz Festival Shops at Don Mills Schedule:

Shuffle Demons – Friday, June 22 at 8:00pm
The legend of the Shuffle Demons is well known to Canadians. Beginning in September 1984 with veteran street sax player Demon Richard Underhill pleasing the pedestrian multitudes at the corner of Yonge and Bloor in Toronto, the Shuffle Demons quickly evolved into an immensely popular street band. Drawing hordes of hipsters to their street gigs with their wild playing and exotic wardrobe, the Demons (Mike Murley, Stich Wynston, Jim Vivian, Dave Parker and Richard Underhill) next took their caustic collection of musical majesties and travesties inside and began pleasing bunches of boppers in Toronto clubs. More touring and more albums followed and soon the Shuffle Demons were playing to packed houses around the world with a new line-up featuring Perry White and George Koller, and wearing brand new demon duds by Kurt Swinghammer. The Shuffle Demons released 6 albums and 7 videos in their 23 year career and have played 1000s of shows at every major jazz and folk festival in Canada during 20 Canadian tours. They toured Europe 15 times playing from Estonia to Italy, from the Netherlands to Norway, from Switzerland to Sweden, from Germany to Belgium.

Fern Lindzon Quartet  - Saturday, June 23 at 2:00pm
JUNO Award nominee Fern Lindzon has been praised as “an engaging pianist and singer who brings an unassuming authority, an inquiring spirit and a natural grace to contemporary jazz,” and as “a rare and fascinating talent,” by jazz writers Mark Miller and Irwin Block, respectively. She moves freely and easily between jazz standards, Brazilian melodies, klezmer instrumentals, Yiddish arts songs and her own compositions. Fern has been heard at leading jazz clubs in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Vancouver and Victoria and at jazz festivals in Ontario. Fern’s involvement in the Toronto music community is further reflected in her work at Havergal College, where she directs the jazz choir and teaches piano, and in her place on the advisory board of the Jazz Performance and Education Centre.

Clayton Doley Quartet  - Saturday, June 23 at 5:00pm
Over the years, Clayton has worked with a plethora of international superstars including Harry Manx, The Divinyls, Silverchair, Nigel Kennedy, David Garibaldi and Larry Braggs from Tower of Power, Nina Person from The Cardigans, Steve Cropper and Donald 'Duck' Dunn from Booker T and the MG's, Eugene 'Hideaway' Bridges, Mica Paris, Paul Pena, Denny Freeman,  Derek Trucks, James Morrison, Kasey Chambers, Jimmy Barnes, Billy Thorpe, The Bamboos, Guy Sebastion, Alex Lloyd, The Whitlams, Tim Rodgers, Rick Price, Dallas Crane, Ian Moss, Russell Morris, The Church, Paul McDermott, Tripod, Frank Woodley, Colin Lane, Flacco, Eddie Perfect. Clayton specialises in Hammond Organ but plays all keyboards, especially the vintage ones. Clayton has worked as a Musical Director for TV shows such as the Sideshow and Good News Week. He also records and produces tracks or albums for other artists as well as his own albums and is in constant demand as a studio session musician.

Madagascar Slim – Saturday, June 23 at 8:00pm
Performing under the name Madagascar Slim, Randriamananjara Radofa Besata Jean Longin is a Canadian-Malagasy folk and blues guitarist born on Halloween night of 1956 in Antananarivo, the capital city of Madagascar. He became a fairly decent Salegy player, one of the most popular styles of dance music in Madagascar, after observing his brother’s techniques and emulating his playing whenever he could get his hands on a guitar. Randriamananjara’s life changed when he heard "Hey Joe" by Jimi Hendrix on the radio. He couldn't speak a word of English and did not understand the lyrics, but the feel of the music really touched something in him and he spent days and nights trying to figure out the chords. Hendrix, B.B. King and the local Malagasy music were the biggest influences to his playing. Randriamananjara moved to Canada in 1979 to further his studies and get a good education.  He learnt English so he could sing the kind of songs he had fallen in love with when he was younger. He took English as a second language and then finished college, graduating with honours in the "Accounting and Finance Co-op Program" at Seneca College.

Alex Pangman & Her Alleycats – Sunday, June 24 at 3:00pm
A unique and powerful vocal presence on the Canadian jazz scene, Pangman has enlivened many a venue with her unerring take on classic 1930s era jazz, created when melody and substance reigned supreme. Presented with all the love, fun and respect it deserves, Pangman makes music of the past captivatingly present with her persuasive and infectious charm. Her longtime band the Alleycats back her up, including ace reedsman Ross Wooldridge, ever popular Jesse Barksdale on guitar, and more!
